Netflix Series to Binge Watch

From predictably cheesy holiday movies to binge-worthy series, these shows and movies are a great way to escape the cold weather and cozy up on the couch for hours on end.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina 

Are you still in the spirit of Halloween? Netflix has got you covered with this new, spooky series. If you remember Sabrina the Teenage Witch from the 90s – early 2000s, you know it’s about the adventures a young teenage girl who is half-witch and half-mortal. This show is different than the original, as it is a darker version of the light-hearted series. As Sabrina’s 16th birthday approaches, she must choose between the witch world where she will follow her family’s legacy, and the mortal world to be with her friends and human boyfriend, Harvey Kinkle. It is a great series filled with magic, mischief, and horror. They are coming out with a holiday episode on December 14th, so keep an eye out for that!

 

The Last Kingdom

For all you history buffs, new episodes of the Last Kingdom are out! This show is based on Bernard Cornwell's The Saxon Stories series of novels. It includes lots of historical drama, epic battles, and heroic endeavours set in the 9th century when England was divided into seven separate kingdoms during the Danish invasion. Although it is a fictional series, it is based on real historical timelines. The main character, Uhtred, was the son of a Saxon nobleman. The Danes killed his father and brother, and the Vikings captured Uhtred and raised him as one of their own. Years later, he faces another tragedy by witnessing his home being set on fire, killing his surrogate family, in which he vows to get revenge. Wanting to help build a new nation, it's a test of loyalty and a search for his true identity as he chooses between is ancestry versus his upbringing.

Narcos: Mexico

This series is about crime, drama, and drugs. The first 3 seasons are about the story of Pablo Escobar, known as the Colombian drug lord and wealthiest criminal in history, and how he became a billionaire through the production and distribution of cocaine. The series includes interactions with other drug lords and the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration). The fourth season is a reset and focuses on the birth of the Mexican drug war in the 1980s and the becoming of the Guadalajara Cartel.

 

House of Cards

If you’re into politics and drama, this series is for you! Frank Underwood is an ambitious Democratic Congressman who helped President Garrett Walker become elected. He was promised Secretary of State, however the plan did not go accordingly. The president did not honour his word and instead elected Senator Michael Kern. Feeling betrayed, Underwood is now vowed to get revenge on the people who deceived him with the help of his wife and environmental activist, Claire. There are plenty of themes present in this series, from betrayal, power, and manipulation. Fast-forward to its 6th and final season, Frank Underwood is no longer alive and just like he is now gone, so is his reputation. Claire Underwood steps in as the first female president but is faced with threats and challenges toward her presidency.

The Haunting of Hill House

For those of you who get a kick out of supernatural horror, make sure to check out this TV series. This is an adaption of Shirley Jackson’s novel, a story where 2 parents and their 5 kids move into America’s most haunted house, the Hill House. Going back between the past and present, this family confronts the haunting experiences of the various paranormal activities they faced before fleeing from the horror house. Twenty-six years later, after the suicide of their youngest sibling, the disturbances continue to preoccupy their minds and they are forced to confront how their traumatic experiences affected each one of them.

Riverdale

Much like the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Riverdale is a darker version of the famous Archie Comics, where the creator describes it as “Archie meets Twin Peaks.” Join Betty, Veronica, Archie, Jughead, Cheryl, and others as they uncover the dark mysteries that lurk Riverdale. The first two seasons centered on the mysterious death of Jason Blossom, a famous rich teenager and Cheryl Blossom’s twin brother, and the man behind “The Black Hood,” a murderer whose goal is to kill all sinners of Riverdale. The third season focuses on a new dark adventure - uncovering the mystery behind a threatening cult in Riverdale that is leading to more deaths.

Dynasty

This is a reboot of the 1980’s prime-time soap opera. This Netflix series is about 2 wealthy families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, who fight over the family fortune and their children. When Fallon Carrington, a smart and sly businesswoman, finds out her billionaire father Blake is engaged to Cristal, a rival employee at the family company, she is anything but happy. Her plan to destroy the couple backfires and the COO position that she thought she was getting is given to Cristal. Fallon then decides to team up with her father’s enemy and former employee, Jeff Colby, and thus war is proclaimed. It’s a wild soap with rich people behaving badly, drinks, drama, and diamonds galore!

The Flash

A series of heroism, action, and excitement, this show is about a man named Barry Allen who is given the power of super speed. At the age of 11, his life was forever changed when his mom died in a freak accident. His mother’s death led him to become a forensic scientist with hopes of discovering the mystery behind the murder. One day, his life was about to change; a huge particle accelerator accident leads to Barry being struck by lightning in his lab. After nine months of being in a coma, he discovers that he has the power to move at a superhuman speed, and he becomes The Flash. This has happened to many people, except most of them use their gift for evil. Barry wants to fight crime and help the innocent with his superhuman gift while still trying to uncover the unsolved mystery of his mother’s death.

The Princess Switch

Parent Trap vibes anyone? This romantic comedy is about two girls who look like twins and decide to switch places one week before Christmas. Stacy is a down-to-earth baker from Chicago who takes a trip to Belgravia for the Royal Christmas Baking Contest. She bumps into Duchess Margaret Delacourt, where the two discover they look exactly like twins. So what does one do in such a situation? Switch places, of course! Lady Margaret wants to see what its like to be a “normal” girl before marrying the Prince of Belgravia, while Stacy gets a glimpse of the royal life, from speaking in a British accent to riding horses with the prince. The real plot twist? Stacy falls in love with Margaret’s fiancé, and Margaret falls in love with Stacy’s co-worker Kevin, while both men are unaware of their true identity.

The Holiday Calendar

This is about a woman who wishes for some change in her life, and all she needs is a little help from some holiday magic. Abby is a talented photographer who is stuck in a rut – she is overworked and underpaid in a job she hates and is waiting for her real life to begin. Her best friend Josh comes back in town, a self-proclaimed backpacker who travels the world. Abby wants to be fearless and go after her dreams just like Josh.  One night, Abby’s grandfather gives her an antique advent calendar that belonged to her grandmother. But there’s something magic about it – it predicts Abby’s future, leading to a world of possibilities, from her career to her love life. Although her family wants her to be with Josh, there is another love interest that comes into the scene thanks to the calendar. Will this magical antique lead to her to the person she’s meant to be with?

The Christmas Chronicles

From the makers of “Harry Potter” and “Home Alone,” this is the story of two siblings and a wild Christmas Eve adventure. Brother and sister duo Teddy and Kate are surviving their first Christmas without their dad. Kate is constantly filming on her dad’s old video camera in order to feel closer to him, while Teddy has been getting into some delinquent behavior by stealing cars. With their mom being called in to work an overnight shift at work, the pair decides to work together in order to catch Santa on camera. This took an unexpected turn of events, as they end up crashing Santa’s sleigh. Now it is their job to work together to fix the sleigh, find Santa’s magic hat, track down his flying reindeer and save Christmas, or else many kids won’t be getting their Christmas presents.
